Have you ever noticed someone with asthma? Perhaps some of your friends are suffering from this condition. Asthma (sometimes called bronchial asthma) has been a worldwide epidemic since 1970 and has claimed millions of lives in the past. It is a common lung condition and affects around 25 million people globally. Because asthma is a chronic condition, patients have to seek medical attention frequently.

Symptoms

Asthma can strike anyone at any age. It can occasionally cause shortness of breath or chest tightness. The symptoms could be more severe at night. Other signs of asthma include gastroesophageal reflux condition (GERD), rhinosinusitis, and sleep apnea. Note that asthma is potentially fatal without proper medical treatment.

Causes

Asthma is thought to be caused by a combination of factors, including exposure to air pollution, allergens, and certain medicines. Until today, there is no consensus on why some people have asthma while others do not. However, certain factors do pose a greater risk:

Allergies: Having allergies can raise the risk of developing asthma.

Environmental Factors: When exposed to irritants in the airways, people are more prone to develop asthma. According to a study, allergens, pollutants, gases, and second or third-hand smoke can cause asthma. These seemingly trivial aspects can have a huge impact on our bodies, particularly in children whose immune systems are still growing.

Genetics: If you have a family history of asthma or allergy illnesses, you are more likely to develop the condition.

Respiratory Infections: Certain respiratory infections, such as respiratory syncytial viruses (RSV), can harm the lungs of young children.

Diagnosis & Management

Despite substantial research on asthma by various scientists, no agreement has been reached. There has yet a precise test for diagnosis, and current examination and treatments are based on the pattern of symptoms and response to solution over time. The most common solutions include inhalers and oral medications.

Reliever Inhalers: Normally, patients would try to relieve their symptoms with reliever inhalers when they arise. However, reliever inhalers have certain drawbacks. After using them, you may experience shaking or a rapid heartbeat for a few minutes.

Tablets: If using an inhaler alone is unable to control your symptoms, you may need to take tablets. The most commonly used asthma medications are leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs). LTRAs can cause headaches or pains as side effects.

  1. Haven’t you heard of the “Buteyko system” mouth breathers are some that get asthma, by breathing in too much oxygen, not enough carbon dioxide and nitric oxide. It helps to tape mouth at night so that TMJ when relaxed don’t open mouth. Helps for sleep apnea and snoring.

    1. Dear friend, thanks for your sharing. People who have asthma can try to use this way to relieve their symptom and get some help from it!

    2. I would recommend seeing a Buteyko system trainer. The problem is breathing out too much carbon dioxide. Holding the breath after breathing out helps reset the breathing cycle.
I would also look at Acupuncture. It sees asthma as a kidney adrenal problem, so using Spooky to strengthen the kidney/adrenal energy and taking the stress from the nervous system helps clear the causes to an asthma attack.

      1. Dear Robert, thanks for you sharing and support. This will help someone who have the same problem to get more helpful information. Have a nice day. Thanks~
