For people who have attended yoga lessons, we might sometimes hear yoga trainers point out a person having uneven shoulders, which is especially obvious when they do yoga postures. Why does it happen? Is it a bad habit or a symptom of bone problems?
In fact, it could be a sign of scoliosis, an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, usually in an “S” or “C” shape. It is a common bone problem, with about 3% of the population having scoliosis, and most develop during the teenage years.
Mild scoliosis generally does not interfere with our daily life, but when developing to severe stages, treatment is necessary because severe scoliosis can even cause trouble with breathing and movement.
The causes of most scoliosis cases are unknown. However, research suggests possible factors are environmental and genetic factors.
Scoliosis can be classified into:
Idiopathic scoliosis comprises about 80% of all cases. It cannot be prevented and is not considered the consequence of bad posture, exercise, or diet. The cause of this kind is unknown.
Congenital scoliosis is present from birth. It is caused by the spinal bones not forming properly in the womb and may occur in any part of the spine.
Neuromuscular scoliosis generally progresses more rapidly than others. It is considered an underlying neurological or muscular condition, such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and spina bifida.
- A significantly curved spine
- Uneven shoulders
- Uneven hips, arms, or leg lengths
- The entire body leans to one side
- Ribs at different heights
- Slow nerve action
Most people with scoliosis may have back pain. When twisting the torso, they will face limited mobility, and some body organs such as the stomach and intestines tighten, further leading to constipation. Idiopathic scoliosis may even affect the lung.
Management of scoliosis
Many children with scoliosis may not need treatment because the curve may improve as the children grow. However, if you are concerned about the risk of curve deterioration, it is better to have regular inspections every four months (for children) and every five years (for adults).
Braces are only effective for skeletally immature patients. Older children can wear braces to prevent the curve from worsening as they grow. The brace should be checked regularly to ensure that it always fits perfectly. For best results, these patients need to wear a brace for 16 to 23 hours a day until the bone stops growing.
In general, doctors recommend surgery when the spine is more than 40 degrees curved and has the possibility of deterioration. However, these procedures take a long time to recover and may have side effects, such as arthritis of the discs, joints, and ligaments.
